Shoulder Pain Treatment in Asheville, NC

The shoulder is a ball and socket joint consisting of three bones – the humerus (upper arm bone), scapula (shoulder blade), and clavicle (collarbone). The humerus sits within a shallow socket located in the scapula called the glenoid cavity. This joint allows for a wide range of motion and provides stability to the shoulder. Approximately 70% of people will experience shoulder pain at some point. Shoulder pain occurs for various reasons, including an injury or degenerative joint disease such as arthritis. It can also be caused by muscular strains, overuse, or poor posture.

The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body, allowing for a wide range of motion. This also means it is prone to injury and can easily be strained or overused. Poor posture, inadequate warm-up before physical activities, and repetitive actions such as typing on a computer or carrying bags can all lead to shoulder pain. Several muscles attach to and move the shoulder joint, making it easy for muscle problems to develop, including the rotator cuff, trapezius, and deltoid muscles. Weakness or tightness in any of these muscles can lead to pain and decreased range of motion.

Shoulder pain can refer to the neck or other areas in the body, such as the chest, forearm, and elbow. Pain can also refer from the shoulder to other areas, such as the forearm, elbow, or hand. Shoulder pain can be acute (sudden onset) or chronic (long term). Acute shoulder pain is usually caused by a traumatic event such as an injury, while chronic shoulder pain is usually caused by degenerative joint disease or muscle problems. Research shows that 50% of shoulder pain cases resolve within 8-12 weeks with conservative treatment, 40% become chronic for longer than one year, and 10% become chronic for longer than two years. It is essential to seek chiropractic treatment as soon as possible to avoid long-term pain and disability. The duration of treatment will depend on the cause of the pain in the shoulder and the severity of the symptoms.

I highly recommend Dr. Boyhan. I met Dr. Boyhan through my trainer Crystal at Specialized Fitness. I was in the military for 5.5 years and during my time I picked up a few injuries and aggravated a dormant auto immune disease called Psoriatic Arthritis as well as A.S. I have always been wary of chiropractors due to my experiences in the past of them simply just looking at me, doing random things, and sending me on my way. Dr. Boyhan is not that kind of chiropractor. He helps you identify the root cause of the problem which for me was a severe imbalance in my pull muscles compared to my push muscles. Over the last few months he has worked with my trainer and myself to do exercise to correct imbalances that are causing my cervical pain and I have made significant progress in the few months I've been seeing him. Not only has he helped me physically but in a way he has been like a mentor to me; keeping me motivated when I'm having a bad week. I highly recommend him to anyone who is looking for evidence based chiropractic care.

At 19 the last thing you want to hear is “you’re gonna need a back surgery and many more in your life” After surgery with no improvement, many doctors telling me I was a lost cause without surgery, physical therapy not making a dent, and multiple procedures, a friend told me about their experience with Dr.Boyhan and I immediately booked an appointment. At 20 years old I could barely walk, much less go about my day to day life. After just two appointments I felt like a new person, I could take my dog on runs, I could sleep comfortably, and just live my life to the fullest extent. Months down the line, it’s rare that I’m in pain and it’s no where near where I was. Dr.Boyhan listens to what I’m saying, he doesn’t belittle me, and he makes sure we get to the root of the problem. This has changed my life around in so many ways and I make sure to tell everyone I know about it.

I was skeptical of having chiropractic work done, however after years of massage and acupuncture for chronic pain, I found that throwing in chiropractic adjustments has resulted in longer lasting pain relief and the ability to be more flexible. The range of motion in my neck has greatly improved after 5 treatment sessions. Dr. Chris is data based - using real-time xrays info and then thermal scans to determine how to proceed with treatment. I highly recommend him to anyone who feels limited in motion or experiencing pain.

Dr. Boyhan is absolutely amazing! I was in pretty rough shape when I started going to him. I have seen substantial improvement in the short period of time I have been seeing him. I am so very fortunate to have fallen into Dr. Boyhan’s care and to have his help on the road to reclaiming my physical health. When I began the healing journey with him, to address a traumatic mtn bike accident that happened 12 years prior, I was a shell of a person in constant pain and cognitively hazy. I had resigned myself that this persistent and chronic pain was my forever normal and that I wasn’t going to improve. Thankfully I was referred to Dr. Boyhan by a dear friend who experienced significant relief and healing with him. His immense knowledge of the body and his understanding and acknowledging both the physical and the emotional toll the accident had taken on me was profound. The moving X-rays (I had never heard about this type of imaging!) were an invaluable tool to see exactly where the issues originated, where my neck and back were injured, and an excellent visual tool to educate me about the trauma that I had sustained. His chiropractic abilities extend beyond the traditional practices and after the first adjustment with Dr. Boyhan, my entire being shifted and I felt immediate release and relief from years of suffering. I finally believed that my body could heal and that I wasn’t trapped by the agony I had been living with. With his devoted guidance, offerings of support, and continuous encouragement, I am able to live in a more grounded and physically capable body and the adjustments have given me a consistent release from pain. I never imagined I would feel ease from the discomfort I had endured for so many years. Dr. Boyhan is an exceptionally gifted and skilled chiropractor and I am tremendously grateful for the positive changes he has helped me to achieve.

After a few weeks of severe neck pain, Dr Boyhan got me in very quickly. He was very thorough, professional and was genuinely concerned about my pain. The first appointment was terrible, the pain and all the xrays and I started coughing and couldn't seem to stop. Dr. Boyhan stopped took time let me get water and air before we proceeded. We had a couple visits and as of date I'm having no pain! Thanks to Dr Boyhan and all the staff for such quick and professional care! Michelle Cope

I have suffered most of my life with neck pain after a car accident at the age of sixteen. Dr Boyhan successfully fixed my neck pain after all these years. Recently I suffered from a headache that lasted 9 days with pain in the back right side of my head. After seeing my doctor, Gus Vickery, he recommended that I see Dr Boyhan. Dr Boyhan got me in the same day and I felt immediate relief from the pain and pressure. My sinuses have been draining and I can even breathe better. As a nurse, I feel like solid chiropractic care is the perfect complement to functional medicine for staying healthy in today’s world that is filled with toxins. Dr Boyhan has been a huge part of my wellness.

Bursitis occurs when the bursa, a small sac that helps cushion and protects the shoulder joint, becomes inflamed. Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder that can cause inflammation and swelling in the shoulder joint. Chiropractic care is an excellent way to manage arthritis symptoms and restore patients’ quality of life.

Sprain

Another possible cause of shoulder pain is a sprain. This occurs when the ligaments around the joint stretch too far, causing pain, swelling, and decreased mobility. Treatment for a sprain typically involves rest, ice, and a focus on reducing inflammation.

Tendinitis

Tendinitis is another common cause of pain in the shoulder, occurring when the tendons that connect the muscles to bones become inflamed and irritated, leading to pain and stiffness in the joint. Treatment for tendonitis usually involves rest, ice, and anti-inflammatory lifestyle changes.

Frozen Shoulder

A frozen shoulder occurs when the connective tissues around the joint become unusually stiff and tight, which restricts movement and causes pain. Joint manipulation and mobilization techniques improve mobility and reduce restrictions to increase range of motion and decrease pain. Myofascial release and trigger point therapy may also reduce tension and promote relaxation of the surrounding tissues.

Our team is here to help you find relief from your shoulder pain so that you can get back to living life without discomfort.

Your doctor will be able to determine the best course of treatment based on the cause of your pain, your individual needs and goals, and your comprehensive evaluation.

Yes, chiropractors can help with pain in the shoulder. They specialize in adjusting the spine and joints to improve posture and reduce inflammation.

Should I see a doctor or chiropractor for shoulder pain?

Why is my shoulder pain not going away?

You may just be treating the symptoms and not the underlying condition. Treating the symptoms with painkillers may temporarily mask the pain, but the instigating issue still exists, so the symptoms will return when the medication wears off.

What could shoulder pain be a sign of?

A variety of factors, such as bursitis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, sprains, or tendinitis, can cause shoulder pain. It is important to seek medical advice from a qualified professional to get an accurate diagnosis and an appropriate treatment plan.

How do I stop severe shoulder pain?

A chiropractor will investigate the root cause of the problem to stop the pain at the source. We take a holistic approach that relieves the pain and prevents it from returning while optimizing the body’s healing and immune systems.

What does a pinched nerve in the shoulder feel like?

Pinched nerves can cause pain, tingling, and numbness in the affected area. It is important to seek medical advice to properly diagnose and treat the condition.

How should I sleep with shoulder pain?

Sleep on your back with a pillow or small, rolled-up towel under your back to maintain a neutral spine. Avoid sleeping on the affected shoulder. If you prefer sleeping on your side, place a pillow between your arms to align your shoulders properly and reduce pressure on the affected shoulder. It is best to avoid sleeping on your stomach.
