This clarity helps you understand why previous treatments failed and the precise corrections required for lasting results.

3. Feel The Results

With your structural issue identified, we shift to the final phase: functional restoration. How We Treat Headaches In Asheville, NC

Comprehensive Consultation and Exam

A chiropractor will begin by conducting a comprehensive consultation and exam of your lower back, neck, and head. By performing physical tests and asking questions about the severity, frequency, location, and duration of the headache, a chiropractor can determine if chiropractic care is right for you.

There are over 150 different types of headaches. Determining which headache you are suffering from will define the appropriate steps for care.

Digital X-rays

Your chiropractor may recommend digital X-rays to rule out more serious causes of headaches, such as structural issues within the head. X-rays may allow your chiropractor to identify spinal misalignments, bone spurs, and other causes of headaches that require more intensive treatment.

Your chiropractor will use X-rays to determine what kind of treatment will be most effective. By addressing the cause of your headache rather than just the pain, chiropractic care can provide more effective long-term results than traditional medical care.

Specific Chiropractic Care in Asheville, NC

After your chiropractor has done a comprehensive examination to determine the cause of your headaches, they can develop a specific plan to treat the cause of your headaches. This will be tailored to you and will target areas that may be contributing to the pain. Many headaches are caused by cervical subluxation – spinal misalignments in the neck. These misalignments can disrupt proper muscle balance and function as well as interrupt nerve flow, scrambling communication between the brain and body.

Chiropractic adjustments correct these misalignments to restore proper nerve flow and muscle function, relieving muscle tension.

Massage

Massage therapy is one of the most effective non-invasive treatments and can help relieve tension and soreness throughout your entire body. It decreases headaches’ severity by reducing muscle tension in the neck, shoulders, back, and face and improving circulation to accelerate healing. Massage therapy also relieves pain, improves flexibility and range of motion, and helps promote relaxation relieving another cause of headaches, stress.

Custom Therapeutic Exercise Plan

Chiropractors may use various exercises to help you improve your condition and reduce pain. These exercises are customized to you and can help strengthen your neck and back muscles, relieving tension throughout the body.

By improving the function of these muscles, you can continue to feel better long after the massage has ended. In addition, exercises improve your range of motion, relieve soreness, and increase flexibility.

Spinal Decompression

Chiropractors often recommend spinal decompression to help relieve pressure on the nervous system by restoring proper alignment of the vertebrae. This therapy can be used for acute and chronic conditions, helping you feel better faster and preventing headaches from returning.

This non-invasive, non-surgical treatment involves simple equipment to relieve pressure on the spinal discs. This reduces pain and nerve irritation, rehydrating the discs and giving them a chance to heal. Patients can quickly see results in as little as one session and go home immediately, so there’s no interruption in work, school, or other daily activities.

Deep Tissue Laser

In addition to massage and exercise therapy, chiropractors use deep-tissue laser therapy to treat muscle spasms, pain, and stiffness throughout the body. Laser therapy helps to reduce pain and tension throughout the entire body and can help relieve you from headaches over time. Its greatest asset is stimulating healing at the cellular level to aid the nervous system in restoring balance and function to the body.

Nutrition and Supplementation

Our diet plays a significant role in headaches and headache relief. We will often recommend dietary changes that help support your overall health. A diet high in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory foods helps reduce stress and lessen the effects of headaches throughout the entire body. These include red beans, cucumber, garlic, black tea, and dark chocolate. Reducing inflammation, especially through natural means like diet, is an excellent way to relieve headaches and prevent future flare-ups.

I highly recommend Dr. Boyhan. I met Dr. Boyhan through my trainer Crystal at Specialized Fitness. I was in the military for 5.5 years and during my time I picked up a few injuries and aggravated a dormant auto immune disease called Psoriatic Arthritis as well as A.S. I have always been wary of chiropractors due to my experiences in the past of them simply just looking at me, doing random things, and sending me on my way. Dr. Boyhan is not that kind of chiropractor. He helps you identify the root cause of the problem which for me was a severe imbalance in my pull muscles compared to my push muscles. Over the last few months he has worked with my trainer and myself to do exercise to correct imbalances that are causing my cervical pain and I have made significant progress in the few months I've been seeing him. Not only has he helped me physically but in a way he has been like a mentor to me; keeping me motivated when I'm having a bad week. I highly recommend him to anyone who is looking for evidence based chiropractic care.

At 19 the last thing you want to hear is “you’re gonna need a back surgery and many more in your life” After surgery with no improvement, many doctors telling me I was a lost cause without surgery, physical therapy not making a dent, and multiple procedures, a friend told me about their experience with Dr.Boyhan and I immediately booked an appointment. At 20 years old I could barely walk, much less go about my day to day life. After just two appointments I felt like a new person, I could take my dog on runs, I could sleep comfortably, and just live my life to the fullest extent. Months down the line, it’s rare that I’m in pain and it’s no where near where I was. Dr.Boyhan listens to what I’m saying, he doesn’t belittle me, and he makes sure we get to the root of the problem. This has changed my life around in so many ways and I make sure to tell everyone I know about it.

I was skeptical of having chiropractic work done, however after years of massage and acupuncture for chronic pain, I found that throwing in chiropractic adjustments has resulted in longer lasting pain relief and the ability to be more flexible. The range of motion in my neck has greatly improved after 5 treatment sessions. Dr. Chris is data based - using real-time xrays info and then thermal scans to determine how to proceed with treatment. I highly recommend him to anyone who feels limited in motion or experiencing pain.

Dr. Boyhan is absolutely amazing! I was in pretty rough shape when I started going to him. I have seen substantial improvement in the short period of time I have been seeing him. Kinsey is fantastic as well. I highly recommend Dr. Boyhan. He is a very knowledgeable, caring man and pays close attention to whatever your situation may be. Thank you both for helping me!

I am so very fortunate to have fallen into Dr. Boyhan’s care and to have his help on the road to reclaiming my physical health. When I began the healing journey with him, to address a traumatic mtn bike accident that happened 12 years prior, I was a shell of a person in constant pain and cognitively hazy. I had resigned myself that this persistent and chronic pain was my forever normal and that I wasn’t going to improve. Thankfully I was referred to Dr. Boyhan by a dear friend who experienced significant relief and healing with him. His immense knowledge of the body and his understanding and acknowledging both the physical and the emotional toll the accident had taken on me was profound. The moving X-rays (I had never heard about this type of imaging!) were an invaluable tool to see exactly where the issues originated, where my neck and back were injured, and an excellent visual tool to educate me about the trauma that I had sustained. His chiropractic abilities extend beyond the traditional practices and after the first adjustment with Dr. Boyhan, my entire being shifted and I felt immediate release and relief from years of suffering. I finally believed that my body could heal and that I wasn’t trapped by the agony I had been living with. With his devoted guidance, offerings of support, and continuous encouragement, I am able to live in a more grounded and physically capable body and the adjustments have given me a consistent release from pain. I never imagined I would feel ease from the discomfort I had endured for so many years. Dr. Boyhan is an exceptionally gifted and skilled chiropractor and I am tremendously grateful for the positive changes he has helped me to achieve.

After a few weeks of severe neck pain, Dr Boyhan got me in very quickly. He was very thorough, professional and was genuinely concerned about my pain. The first appointment was terrible, the pain and all the xrays and I started coughing and couldn't seem to stop. Dr. Boyhan stopped took time let me get water and air before we proceeded. We had a couple visits and as of date I'm having no pain! Thanks to Dr Boyhan and all the staff for such quick and professional care! Michelle Cope

I have suffered most of my life with neck pain after a car accident at the age of sixteen. Dr Boyhan successfully fixed my neck pain after all these years. Recently I suffered from a headache that lasted 9 days with pain in the back right side of my head. After seeing my doctor, Gus Vickery, he recommended that I see Dr Boyhan. Dr Boyhan got me in the same day and I felt immediate relief from the pain and pressure. My sinuses have been draining and I can even breathe better. As a nurse, I feel like solid chiropractic care is the perfect complement to functional medicine for staying healthy in today’s world that is filled with toxins. Dr Boyhan has been a huge part of my wellness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a chiropractor good for headaches?

Chiropractors are excellent at diagnosing and treating headaches. Much of their work involves identifying the underlying cause of the headache for long-term headache relief.

When should you see a chiropractor for headaches?

Headaches are common, but they are not normal. It is our body warning us of a deeper problem. Chiropractors can help pinpoint the underlying cause and address that for long-term relief rather than continually chasing symptoms.

Is a massage or chiropractic better for headaches?

Research has shown that patients who receive both massage and chiropractic care have the most favorable outcomes. This is especially true if your headaches are the result of muscle tension. In addition, research has shown that relaxation techniques can significantly reduce pain, even without a spinal adjustment.

Do medical doctors recommend chiropractors for headaches?

In many cases, medical doctors will recommend a chiropractor for their patients. Conventional medical treatment involves painkillers and muscle relaxers. These methods may temporarily relieve pain symptoms, but chiropractors can address the structural issues that are the source of your headaches. Structural problems require structural solutions.

How can I relieve my headaches?

Until you have experienced a chiropractic adjustment, you should avoid strenuous activity and heavy lifting. You should also maintain a healthy diet, take relaxation breaks, and release any tension in the neck and shoulders.

Is chiropractic effective for migraine headaches?

Chiropractic can help relieve the symptoms of migraines. A chiropractor can adjust your spine and balance energy flow through your nervous system. Chiropractic care can increase circulation in the areas of the head that cause migraines, which can reduce inflammation and pain caused by migraines. In addition, chiropractic care can help reduce the likelihood of a migraine attack.

What is a natural way to relieve tension headaches?

Research has shown that a natural way to relieve tension headaches is to use a relaxation technique, like progressive muscle relaxation. The technique involves tensing specific muscles for five seconds and then relaxing them for twenty seconds. The exercise should be performed for ten minutes, which may help relieve headaches faster than other treatments.

Medical doctors and providers often recommend chiropractors because they have tried-and-true methods to reduce the frequency and intensity of chronic pain disorders such as migraines, whiplash headaches, and tension headaches. Headaches may be relieved with basic over-the-counter pain medication, but these medications often leave the patient with additional side effects. The best medicine for a headache is natural chiropractic care.
